Why Community Matters in Eating Disorder Recovery

There is something really special about the eating disorder community here in San Antonio.

It is a relatively small community, but it is a mighty one.

Many of us have worked alongside one another for years. We share clients and collaborate across treatment teams. We refer to one another, consult with one another, learn from one another, and step in when someone needs additional support. We have watched each other change jobs, open practices, grow programs, become parents, take on new roles, and move through both professional and personal seasons of life.

And through all of it, we keep showing up for one another and for the people in our community who are impacted by eating disorders.

That is one of the reasons Recovery With Our Community means so much to me.

On Saturday, November 7, from 9–11 AM, I want to invite you to join us at beautiful Confluence Park here in San Antonio, under the BHP Pavilion, for a morning centered around recovery, connection, education, and community.

This event is not only for eating disorder professionals. It is for individuals in recovery, family members, friends, caregivers, students, professionals, and anyone who simply wants to learn more.

Because the more awareness we create, the more opportunities we have to help.

Eating disorders thrive in secrecy, shame, misinformation, and the belief that someone has to “look sick enough” before they deserve support. Community gives us an opportunity to challenge that. It allows people to learn what resources exist, meet the people providing those resources, ask questions, and understand that recovery support is available right here in San Antonio.

Throughout the morning, our sponsors and community partners will share more about the work they do and the services they offer. Each will also have an interactive activity—something designed to help you work on your relationship with yourself, learn something new, or take home a tool that you can use or share with someone else.

You do not need to have an eating disorder to come.

You do not need to be a therapist or dietitian.

You do not need to know exactly what to say or do.

You can simply come, walk around, learn, connect, and be part of a community that believes recovery deserves to be talked about.

Sometimes helping starts with knowing what resources are available. Sometimes it starts with learning how to have a conversation. Sometimes it is discovering a provider you did not know existed. And sometimes it is simply seeing, in person, that there is an entire community of people who care deeply about this work.

San Antonio's eating disorder community may be small, but it is mighty. I am incredibly proud to be part of it.

I hope you will come spend the morning with us.
